Chimney Repairs in Inverness

Chimney stacks repaired, repointed and rebuilt

Chimney stacks take the full force of Highland wind and rain, and a tired stack is one of the most common causes of damp in upstairs rooms and lofts. Thistle Roofing repairs chimneys across Inverness and the surrounding area, from granite and stone stacks on traditional houses to brick and rendered stacks on newer homes.

Most chimney work comes down to a few things: mortar joints that have weathered away and need repointing, flaunching around the pots that has cracked, and flashings where the stack meets the roof that have lifted or split. We also repair or replace chimney caps, crowns and liners, and rebuild stacks that are too far gone to repair.

We look at the stack, explain what it needs and give you a free, no-obligation quote. All of our chimney work is guaranteed.

Signs your chimney needs attention

A chimney problem can do a lot of damage before it shows inside. Look out for these.

  • Damp on chimney breasts

Damp patches on the walls around a chimney breast, upstairs or in the loft, often mean water is getting into the stack.

  • Crumbling mortar joints

Gaps and soft, sandy mortar between the stones or bricks let rain soak into the stack.

  • Cracked flaunching

The mortar around the pots sheds water off the top of the stack. Once it cracks, water runs straight in.

  • Lifted or split flashings

Where the stack meets the roof, flashings that have lifted or split are a common leak point.

  • A leaning stack

A stack that leans or has loose stones or bricks needs looking at quickly, before it gets worse.

  • Debris on the roof

Bits of mortar, render or pot on the roof or in the gutter are an early sign the stack is wearing.

  6. Checked and cleared

We check the finished stack and the roof around it, and clear away before we go.

Why is there damp around my chimney breast?

Usually because water is getting into the stack through worn mortar, cracked flaunching or failed flashings. A missing or damaged cap can let rain straight down the flue too. We find which it is and repair it.

What is chimney repointing?

Raking out the weathered mortar between the stones or bricks and filling the joints with fresh mortar. It keeps water out of the stack and holds it together.

Can you rebuild a chimney stack?

Yes. If a stack is badly damaged or unstable, we can take it down and rebuild it.

Do you repair chimney flashings?

Yes. Flashings where the chimney meets the roof are one of the most common leak points. We re-dress or replace them so the joint is watertight.

Do you repair chimney caps and liners?

Yes. We repair or replace chimney caps, crowns and liners as part of our chimney work.

How much does a chimney repair cost?

It depends on the size and condition of the stack, the work needed and the access. We give you a free quote after looking at it.

Is your chimney work guaranteed?

Yes, all of our work is guaranteed. We explain what the guarantee covers when we quote.
